First of all , Let me tell you a very important thing , which I found lot of people don’t know about major Ecommerce websites – like amazon , ebay, flipkart, snapdeal,etc .The products listed on these websites are not sold by the website owners .These websites are actually an online marketplace , where registered merchants’ & sellers sell their products online , These website owners just take a little commission on each sale made by the merchants. Hence here I am going to tell you some tips & procedure to start your own ecommerce website or a marketplace.
Step 1 – Concept & Planning : Your Success completely depends upon the concept & planning of your ecommerce website . Hence I would suggest you to think on several aspects on following points –
  1. Uniqueness – To be very frank , I would tell you that if you are dreaming to become another amazon , ebay ,flipkart etc . It is extremely impossible to compete with them until & unless you have billions of money to spent on your project & then after your luck matters as well . Hence try to make your website concept new & unique which could attract customers to purchase from your website.
  2. Product you will sell on your website – Today there is a huge competition in this field , Hence in such a condition it is extremely difficult to sell your products at higher margin (price) to make more profit . 2.Purchase Hosting Space – Depending upon your business model you have to decide that how much hosting space you should purchase . If you are going to set up a small ecommerce website which contains maximum 1000 products , then 10 GB of space is sufficient . But if you are willing to create a huge marketplace like amazon & ebay then you need to purchase a Complete Dedicated Server .
Note – While purchasing Hosting space always check the following points in mind .
  1. Bandwidth – It is the amount of data transfer permitted from the hosting server , when people will browse your website from different location of the world. Hence always buy hosting plans which offers you unlimited bandwidth.
  2. Type of hosting server ( Linux or windows ) – Before purchasing the hosting space , please decide that which Ecommerce software you are going to use like – magento , oscommerce , perestashop , opencart etc . Enquire that these software’s supports either windows hosting or linux hosting
  3. Number of My SQl Databases – Ask for how many Free Mysql Database is provided by your hosting provider with your hosting plans , because your hosting plan must contains 1 Mysql database in order to install your ecommerce software . note all ecommerce website needs at least 1 mysql database.
  4. Step 3. Decide which Ecommerce Software you will use for your Ecommerce portal – As of now there are several Ecommerce software’s  available in the market which contains all the advanced features which will be required for your business . and  basic version  all these software’s  are absolutely free  They charge for their premium version or for extremely beautiful themes . The most popular Ecommerce software’s are – Magento commerce , perestashop, opencart, zencart, oscommerce etc. If you are going to create a market place like amazon etc then use Magento Commerce , but if you are planning to start from a small scale then use – perestashop or oscommerce whatever you prefer . However Magento commerce is the best & most demandable ecommerce software used as of now whose main advantage is that , you will get its several extensions & plug-in or adons free of cost . Also magento commerce contains maximum feature & functions as compare to their competitors . The only drawback of magento that – it runs perfectly on dedicated server only , if you install magento on shared hosting , it will not work properly .
    Step 4 . Payment Gateways Integration – In order to receive payment in advance  from the customer, you need to integrate a payment gateway with your website for online transactions. There are several leading payment gateways available in different country. These payment gateways  may charge you some initial set up cost & annual maintenance cost yearly & They will also chare you a small percentage on each sell you made. The best payment gateway for international transaction is paypal ,  it is widly used in countries like USA , UK , Australia , etc , but people of india are not allowed as of now to make payment from paypal , but they can receive payments send by any other countries , hence for india paypal is not suitable. For india best payment gateways are – CCAvenue ,Bill desk , Payu , payzippy , EBS etc.
    In Order to sign up with these payment gateways , you need to complete your website , then prepare the list of documents’ as demanded by the gateway company . pay their fees if it charges . Once it will be done they will provide you a Payment integration kit which contains everything  required for integration like – Software plug-in , adon , extension , ID , working & complete guide how to setup it on your website. If you are still not able  to integrate the gateway on your website , you  pay some fee to them they will do it for you.
    Step 5 – Logistic & Courier Services – for shipping your orders you need to tie up with any courier agency , approach them , put your proposal & ask for discount , & also ask for cash on delivery option . they will provide you their shipping plans for business , sign up with them .
    Step 6 – Marketing & Advertisements –  At the end of the day  its time to get result , so the most important thing is marketing  & advertisement . The question is how customer will come to your website to make a purchase ?  The answer is – mostly by search engines like , google,bing,msn,yahoo etc . Hence in order to get listed in the search results of these search engines you need to work on search engine optimization / search engine marketing  for your websites for certain keywords which are related to your products you sell .

Now suppose a customer willing to buy a handicraft for decorating his home then he will search in google or bing or in msn or yahoo that “ buy handicraft online” . Then the search engine will show thousands of websites who sells handicrafts , but buyer will most probably buy from those websites   who are in 1st page of search results. Hence in order to get listed your website by search engine in first page of search results . you need to do SEO/SEM for you website.
    Social media marketing – You need to create a facebook  fan page , twitter account , google plus account for your business in order to advertise your products by engaging lot of public in your business,
    Paid advertisements – Since SEO / SEM results takes probably six months to show its effects , hence till that time you can also use paid Google & facebook advertisement to promote your website. You can also , advertise offline by newspaper ads , banner & hoarding ads etc.
    Customer Support – Once your Business start running , provide a quality  products , satisfactory support & attractive offers to your customers , so they can come again & again to shop on your website . These quality will make you a big brand in future.
